THE PROGRAMME
5:00 PM: Conference
European Masks
Hide, show Desires and necessities.
By Jean-Yves Anézo, speaker and author
The mask is a social expression par excellence. What does it hide? What does it show?
Moving away from the African lands of Vodou, we will take a tour of masked celebrations close to us, in Europe.
We will sketch the manners, the meaning, the accompaniment. We will observe to what extent there is no single meaning to the mask, so diverse are its expressions. However, we will highlight the common characteristics that make masked gatherings important demonstrations of collective freedom.
