Sacrifices are one of the constants of religious acts. When a person or group offers a victim to a deity during a rite, through a sacred act, either real or symbolic, by putting it to death, it is called a sacrifice. There are other sacrifices that do not require bloodshed.

Vodou rituals are no exception: sacrifices are either real or symbolic. The gods demand to be fed, so it is paramount to satisfy them in order to maintain «balanced» relationships with them, and to ask for the help that humans may need.

In preamble to the visit, we shall address this issue without taboo but with the respect and discretion that this subject requires. What is sacrificed? Who are the victims immolated? Is the forbidden a sacrifice? Why is blood sometimes needed to nourish the gods? Are immolations the sole preserve of Vodou practitioners?
