THE TEMPORARY EXHIBITION TO DISCOVER THIS EVENING

Religious magic and sorcerous powers

Beliefs and representations of the invisible between the Upper Rhine valley and Vodou Africa

From 11 March to 30 October 2021

Magic and sorcery are at the heart of many civilisations, yet they retain a great many mysteries. The manipulation of powers, forces, and spirits, by men and women imbued with occult powers enabling them to communicate with the forces that govern the world, most often aims to respond to a threat, a trauma, or simply the concerns of daily life. Magic and its practices are a mirror that reflects an individual’s deepest emotions and desires, but also the spiritual, geographical, and cultural context of an entire society at a given time.

Witches, sorcerers, healers, bone-setters, seers, unhexers, exorcists… Who are they, who are they and what roles are they given? What are their tools, their regalia? The exhibition «Religious magic and sorcerous powers »explores magic and its practitioners, from the upper Rhine to Vodou Africa, and deconstructs a reality composed of a multitude of practices and beliefs across time and continents.

Exhibition designed by the Château Vodou team.
